| Eligibility and Characteristics | Eligibility • You have to complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). • If you want to have subsidized Stafford loans, you must have financial need as determined by your school. • You must be a U.S. citizen or national, a U.S. permanent resident, or eligible non-citizen. • You must be enrolled or plan to enroll at least half time. • You must be accepted for enrollment or attend a school that participates in the Federal Family Education Loan Program. • Have no education loans in default or owe education grant refunds Special eligibility requirements: • If you are male and 18-25 years old you have to be registered with the Selective Service • You have to produce financial need to get a subsidized loan
Characteristics • Repayment is flexible, can include consolidation. • While you are in school at least half time no payments are required. • You can get life-of-loan servicing. • You have not pay in advance • Sometimes no credit check is required. • No payments are required during six-month grace period which immediately following your graduation or dropping to less-than-half-time status.
